Goodbye GoPro: Angler sends roommate’s camera flying

College angler loses rod, GoPro, but catches it all on video

College angler Andrew Nordbye broke his rod and lost his roommate’s GoPro in one cast, and he caught the whole thing on video.

On Tuesday, Nordbye was fishing on Mozingo Lake with his roommate’s GoPro mounted to his rod. He got a solid bite, set the hook and the rod, being unable to flex correctly, broke.  “I did not tighten the GoPro mount excessively, but must have had enough pressure to snap the rod,” Nordbye said.  “Fiberglass can be touchy.”

The GoPro went flying off in to the water. The slow motion video of the rod and camera flying off the boat is both painful and funny to watch.

He jumped in to the 15 – 17 ft deep water to save the camera, but instead of finding his friends gadget, Nordbye  hurt his eardrum.  “I am also a certified diver, but the adrenaline and everything rushed me. My left ear drum is still out of whack and it really hurts to sneeze,” he said.

Andrew promises he’ll buy his roommate, who is at basic training, a new GoPro when he returns in August.

The lesson of this story? “Always have a GoPro float attached when around water,” Nordbye said.
