Very few collegiate anglers in history have accrued more achievements during their college angling career than Bethel University’s Cody Huff – including 2019, when Huff became the Bassmaster Carhartt College Series bracket champion, qualifying him for the 2020 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Guntersville.
Huff will also compete in the Bassmaster Opens in 2020, in part, thanks to generous support from Carhartt – so prior to a Bassmaster Elite Series weigh-in on Lake St. Clair near Carhartt headquarters, Huff was presented a Toyota Tundra and Nitro boat comparable to those he’ll get to use at the Bassmaster Classic and throughout the 2020 season.
The 22-year-old business major from the same town as his buddy Rick Clunn in Ava, Mo., took a moment just after the presentation to talk about everything from his favorite foods to fellow anglers he’d lean on most to catch him a bass on a deserted island.
Q: What’s the coolest thing about being a Carhartt Bassmaster College Series angler?
Huff: Getting to see so many places, and fish so many new lakes.
Q: Pretend you’re stranded on a freshwater island. What three anglers would you choose to help you catch enough fish to help you survive?
Huff: My college buddy Cole Floyd from Bethel, Jacob Wheeler because he catches bass everywhere he goes, and Gerald Swindle, because he’s an incredible angler and he’d keep us laughing.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a weekend when you’re not fishing?
Huff: Whitetail deer hunting.
Q: Tell us what your favorite meal is, and who your favorite sports teams are.
Huff: I love a rib eye grilled medium with a loaded baked potato. And I root for the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals.
Q: What artist would you most like to see in concert?
Huff: I’ll say Luke Combs, but I listen to all kinds of stuff.
Q: If you had to pick three lures for the rest of your life, what three lures would you choose?
Huff: A black-skirted buzzbait, a 3/8-ounce pitchin’ jig, and a 7” finesse worm.
Q: Tell us where and when your dream day of bass fishing would be?
Huff: I’d say March 6-8, 2020 on Lake Guntersville with a lipless crankbait during the Bassmaster Classic.
