Gear Review: Gamakatsu 6-inch Stainless Pliers

What is it?

Gamakatsu 6-inch Stainless Fishing Pliers

What sets it apart?

Gamakatsu introduces a new line of heavy-duty pliers made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel with an array of relevant features. A needle nose design includes a precision split ring feature that facilitates replacements without broken fingernails. Made to cut braid, monofilament or fluorocarbon, the multi-functional jaws are coated with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which helps prevent corrosion and rust.

How do I use it?

The aesthetically pleasing blue handles feature a finger-friendly contour and a non-slip grip that ensures consistent performance in wet conditions. The spring-loaded pliers are available in 6-inch and 7-inch sizes with the main design difference being the braid cutter. The 6-inch model finds this element at the base of the jaws, while the 7-inch version places the braid cutter in the side position.

Angler’s insight:

Gamakatsu’s new pliers include several appealing elements, but the detail that initially caught my eye is the sheath design. Made with a lanyard to keep the pliers close at hand, the sheath features a rigid pouch, as opposed to a tension design. This allows for easier in/out movements with less concern for precise alignment. Also, I prefer open sheaths, rather than styles with hook-and-loop or snap style straps that fold through the plier handles. Just a personal preference, but I can do without that extra step. As long as the pliers include a lanyard like Gamakatsu’s, I never worry about the tool getting away from me.
