Gear Review: Columbia PFG Force 12 Insulated Jacket

What is it?

Columbia PFG Force 12 Insulated Jacket

What sets it apart?

Addressing those damp, chilly days when you don’t quite need bulky rain gear, this lightweight jacket unites 100 percent waterproof technology (OutDry) with insulation for an attractive, functional outer wear piece that’ll easily fit into your tackle bag or tuck under the console. Fully seam-sealed, the Force 12 features abrasion-resistant overlays on the elbows and hem to resist the occasionally harsh surfaces, as well as the wear-and-tear factor of getting up and down from a boat seat.

How do I use it?

Available in five sizes and two colors (black and green) the Force 12 jacket ensures those cold winds won’t infiltrate by providing adjustable drawcords in the hem and the attached storm hood. Also, the elastic cuffs include an inner Neoprene cuff with adjustable hook-and-loop fastener. With zippered side pockets to keep your hands warm and your frequent-use items close, Columbia addresses on-the-water safety by adding reflective accents on the chest pockets, shoulders and hood for 360 visibility.

Angler’s insight:

I’m a big fan of well-designed pockets and this jacket offers a couple of well-conceived features. First, the dual chest pockets feature reinforced lift points for the hook-and-loop plackets, with interior openings sealed with full hook-and-loop enclosures that offer a second layer of security. Interior pockets comprise a wide cargo section and a narrow adjacent section for direct access to smaller items.
