Gear Review: Picasso Speed Drop

WHAT IS IT?

Picasso Speed Drop Jighead

WHAT SETS IT APART?

It’s not often that a bait designed by a collegiate angler gets a lot of attention, but it’s not often that an angler like Auburn’s Tucker Smith hits the scene the way that he has. Smith designed the Picasso Speed Drop to be the ultimate jighead for vertical presentations, or Damiki rigging as it is most widely referred to. Considering this technique excels in deep, clear water, it is extremely important to have a lifelike presentation because the fish get such a good look at the bait. The Picasso Speed Drop is full of features that will enhance your vertical fishing game.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Available in sizes ranging from 1/4 ounce to 1/2 ounce, the Speed Drop features a recessed 90-degree line tie that allows the bait to sit perfectly horizontal in the water for an extremely realistic presentation. This line tie also helps reduce fraying in the line and protects the knot. In addition to a unique line tie, the Speed Drop also features a 2X Strong Gamakatsu Hook, a low-angle double bait keeper that will keep your soft plastic in place and an ultra-realistic head colors with 3D eyes. Available in five different colors.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Vertical fishing with a Damiki rig used to be a niche technique that was used in few places by very few anglers, but as electronics have advanced this technique has really taken off. When an angler sees a fish on the graph, getting a minnow style bait down to it quickly is a great way to put the fish in the boat.

While this technique is extremely simple, having the right gear is a must. If the jighead you’re using doesn’t have the proper line tie, the bait will not sit horizontally in the water column – resulting in an unnatural presentation. The Picasso Speed Drop features a line tie that will keep your bait as natural as possible and keep the fish pinned once it bites.
