WHAT SETS IT APART?
Continuing to expand its profile in the sport fishing industry, Mustad’s ICAST 2022 introductions included a novel concept aimed at promoting generational fishing — the Legacy Combo Series. The simple concept addresses the fact that kids have certain tackle needs, based on their size and/or experience level, more than experienced anglers in the prime of their fishing life. Adding to that notion older anglers, often preferring a more relaxed approach, also have their set of tackle needs. From casting to fish fighting, Mustad’s Legacy Combos are intended to put the right equipment in the right hands.
HOW DO IT DO IT?
Pairing one outfit sized for younger hands with a second one that includes a longer rod and larger reel, the Legacy Combos include two-piece graphite composite rods and durable ball bearing spinning reels pre-spooled with monofilament. The package features a 7-foot, medium/light, moderate action rod and a 30-series spinning reel for seniors, and a 5-foot, light, moderate action rod and a 10-series spinning reel for youth.

Nothing against cartoon-themed fishing outfits — sometimes, it’s just about getting kids interested in the fishing concept — but I’m a firm believer in equipping children with real, functional rods and reels as soon as they’re old enough to comprehend the sport’s basic mechanics. Mustad’s idea of packaging age-appropriate combos is going to help enable a lot of teachable moments from standby gear to impromptu purchases for vacations or those special visits to or from the grandparents.
