Capps’ Oklahoma must-haves tacklebox

See Elite Series pro Blake Capps' best baits for bass fishing in Oklahoma!

After winning the 2024 Mercury B.A.S.S. Nation Championship at Grand Lake, Oklahoma’s Blake Capps began his journey on the Bassmaster Elite Series.
Capps’ home state of Oklahoma features a variety of different types of fisheries – everything from the Arkansas River to highland reservoirs. This makes anglers from Oklahoma like Jason Christie, Luke Palmer and many more very versatile.
While you could reasonably catch bass on any variety of baits in Oklahoma, Capps believes that there’s a number of staples that get the job done time and time again across the state.
Capps will show off the baits he always has tied on his Falcon Rods when he’s fishing in his home state.
BOOYAH Covert Spinnerbait
“When you think about Oklahoma, you think about spinnerbaits,” Capps said. “It’s a bait that is tried and true in this state and continues to make a lot of noise in tournaments. My go-to is a the Booyah Covert series and recently I’ve really liked the finesse series.”
BOOYAH Mobster Swim Jig
“A swim jig is a bait that can be used in a lot of different ways in Oklahoma,” he said. “We have a lot of floating docks in the state, so it’s a great bait to skip around and get in tight spots. It’s also really good on the rivers around grass as well.”
BOOYAH XCS Squarebill
“In the northeast part of the state we have a lot of rock,” said Capps. “A squarebill crankbait is one of my favorite ways to cover a lot of water when fishing around rock or even rolling it around wood. It’s a bait that gets a lot of bites throughout the entire year.”
Texas-rigged Yum Spine Craw
“When you come to Oklahoma, you have to have something to flip with,” he said. “Between boat docks, laydowns, bushes and bank grass, there’s almost always going to be something to flip around. The lakes around here fluctuate water levels a lot, and when the water gets high it’s hard to beat the flipping bite.”
Heddon Super Zara Spook
“The topwater is easily one of my favorite baits to throw here,” he said. “The Heddon Spook is a tried and true bait around here. You can look at all the locals, and they’re all going to have a Spook tied on.”
YUM Hard Head paired with a YUM Scutter Bug
“Another one of my favorites that actually originated here in Oklahoma is the Hard Head,” he said. “You can throw a variety of different baits on it, but it allows you to make really long casts and cover water.”
BOOYAH Finance Jig
“When you’re in northeast Oklahoma, you better have a finesse jig tied on,” said Capps. “It’s a perfect imitator for the forage around here like crawdads and bluegill. It’s a bait that gets a lot of bites during all times of the year.”
