Top 10 lagging, about to get exciting

It’s been a grinder on Pickwick for the first half of Day 2, with 5 of the anglers that started the day in the top 10 still holding onto that accomplishment but not really amassing much weight to defend it, with the exception of Brandon Lester who shows 16-4 for the day. But most of the rest of the guys have been clawing and scratching just to break the double-digit mark.

The current has steadily increased throughout the morning, but it’s not predicted to reach the levels it did yesterday, having nearly maxed out already at around 35,000 units if the schedule holds. It nearly doubled that during competition yesterday, going out of Pickwick dam at a peak of 62,000 units at 3PM, as a few anglers made those crucial last-minute culls.

Each big bite though is about to really come into play. When you have a bunch of 10- to 13- pound bags clogging up the top of the leaderboard, a big bite or two can shake things up in a hurry. That’s what we’ll likely see soon, as guys in the top 20 start to put 4- to 6- pounders in the boat to cull 1- to 2- pounders. They’ll rocket up the leaderboard into the top 5 seemingly out of nowhere. But that’s on account of the door that’s been left wide open by the majority of the morning’s top 10.

As for that top 10 and what a big one will do for them, there are 8 guys within one good swing of the bat of 2nd place Taku Ito right now, and realistically four guys within one good bite of leader Brandon Lester. Chaos is likely to ensue in the top 10 over the next couple hours as we wind down on Day 2 and the fishing gets as good as it’s going to get.
