Last year’s Pickwick Elite Champion Bill Lowen is one angler we all have our eyes on this morning. He’s a favorite of many fans this week and he’s considered one of the best shallow water fishermen on the Elite Series. After all, he won last year’s event pitching a black and blue jig around shallow cover and we all expected to see him doing something shallow here again this week on Pickwick.
But interestingly enough, Lowen started the morning fishing offshore. This is a surprising development. The conditions are a good bit different from what we saw last year, when Lowen had lots of dirty water to fish. But still, several anglers pointed out during practice how there was a little something going on shallow at least. The tail end of the shad spawn was still lingering around and the bluegill were beginning their bedding process as well.
So, we expected to see Lowen and a handful of others like John Cox start shallow doing something different. No doubt Lowen will head shallow at some point in this event. But his starting offshore doesn’t bode well for the shallow bite.
