Through five Elite events, Brandon Cobb appeared invincible. He finished 3rd at Okeechobee, 4th at Santee Cooper, 6th at Murray and 7th at Lay. His worst finish of the year of 20th came at Lake Seminole. And even though it doesn’t count towards the Progressive Angler of the Year race, let’s mention the 8th place finish he had at the Bassmaster Classic as well. Cobb seemed invincible. But the Sabine said otherwise.
A brutally tough outing here (91st) has him sitting in third for AOY now, outside the Day 3 Sabine cut and with no power to improve his standing until the next Elite up North. But, he was only 17 points behind new leader Kyle Welcher at the close of the scales yesterday, 8 behind John Cox who sits in 2nd. A tough day today for either of these two could move Cobb back up, maybe even into the lead. Welcher has two small keepers and sits in 7th on BassTrakk. He’s down five spots (thus five points) from where he started today in second place. Cox sits in 28th on BassTrakk, still without a keeper. He’s down 16 spots from where he started Day 3 in 11th.
If the Sabine Elite ended right now, Cobb would be back in second, ahead of Cox and just 12 points back of Welcher. The true weight of Cobb’s worst finish of the year is still uncertain, for now.
