Am Bass hosted our first event of the season on Lake Vermilion in northern MN. Typically, this time of the year the water temps are around 50 degrees with a great pre-spawn bite for both smallmouth and largemouth. It had been unusually warm leading up to the event with a significant amount of warm days that moved the water temps from 50-52 degrees 10 days prior to the event to mid to high 60’s by the time of the event. That temp increase pulled male smallmouth to beds and made locating largemouth nearly impossible.
The weather leading up to the event was 70-80s for a week, 80 degrees and a sunny day before the event, but tournament day we had a 10-15mph east wind and a high temp in the upper 40’s. Paired with a cloud cover, bed fishing was much more difficult.
Our winning team of father/son Travis and Jace Peterson were able to find a nice bag of smallmouth weighing in at 20.60lbs with a kicker that weighed 4.76lbs.
